A backyard storage shed is only as square and weather-tight as the surface beneath it. Even a 1-inch dip across an 8-foot span can cause sliding or hinged double doors to rub over time. Before your flat-pack cartons arrive, choose one of these three proven residential foundations:
1. Compacted Crushed Stone Pad (Best All-Around Drainage)
Frame a perimeter 6 inches wider and deeper than your shed's exterior dimensions using pressure-treated 4×4 timbers, lay commercial landscape fabric, and fill with 3 to 4 inches of compacted 3/4-inch crushed limestone or #57 stone. Gravel drains heavy summer storms immediately and keeps splashback away from wall panels.
2. Concrete Patio Pavers Over Level Sand
Ideal for compact 5×3 ft vertical lockers, 5×3 ft trash bin enclosures, and 6×4 ft lean-to sheds along side walkways. Excavate 3 inches of sod, tamp 2 inches of paver base sand level in both directions with a 4-foot spirit level, and set concrete pavers edge-to-edge.
3. Poured Concrete Slab (Best for Heavy Mowers & 10×8 ft Buildings)
A 4-inch reinforced concrete pad allows direct expansion-bolt anchoring through your shed's perimeter base rails — highly recommended in coastal or high-wind Florida regions.
